More About Our Great Team
Who are we? First Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 3257 – Really…..It’s not just for programmers!
Who we are: Team 3257 is a competitive high school robotics team under the auspices of Placer County 4-H. The team currently has students from Placer, Lincoln, Woodcreek, Rocklin, Whitney, Granite Bay and Del Oro high schools along with students from Western Sierra Collegiate Academy but welcomes students that attend ANY high school in Placer County including home schooled students. Our team is an FRC team which stands for FIRST Robotics Competition (www.usfirst.org). FIRST is a global organization whose mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.
FRC combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It’s as close to “real-world engineering” as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.
What we do: FRC Team 3257 competes at the FIRST Robotics competition held annually at UC Davis in March. We (along with all FIRST teams across the world) learn the first weekend of January what the challenge is for that year. Our primary “job” is to build a robot that can perform the necessary functions to compete in that challenge. We only have SIX weeks to design, build and test our robot. But we also do lots of other stuff year round including fundraising, marketing, community outreach, mentoring, public relations and more.
How we do it: With lots and lots of teamwork and parent support. Each member of the team has a role to fill. Some members love to solder and weld, others help with community outreach, some manage the website and some even program. You get the picture….it’s not just for kids who love math and science. We are looking to add new team members (and mentors) and expand our skill sets. We need students who can (or want to) create videos and power point presentations, conduct community outreach, and write articles and copy, photography, marketing, and more.
